Dark Honey (The poem) by Me'Chelle
When the check hit but the rent due.
Though she’s broke, don’t claim it.
Cuz, she always make it thru.
She bee, fly walking with her head high.
Low sometimes.
But everyday she try.
Honey that’s Dark. Moving. Shaking the earth. Finding Her placement.
While the earth finds it’s placement in her.
“You cute for a dark……” Honey, even sweeter than the pinkest of burst.
Though she said “no” respectfully, he couldn’t handle the rejection.
He called her a B like He wasn’t thirsty for her nectar.
She adds him to the list of heckling jesters and jealous heffers.
All in a Dark Honey’s day’s work.
Like on the corner Black church.
First baptist, new birth.
She sits in a dish detergent bubble bath and reads and laughs.
Making plans to live out all the dreams she has.

Biography
Me’Chelle (She/Her) is a mother, spoken word poet, musician and teaching artist. She is driven by a passion to entertain, enlighten, and inspire positive change in her community. Her poem “Lumiere” was recently featured at the Lumiere Gala for MSV Chicago (Spring 2023). Her poem “Dark Haunts” was featured in Bone Bouquet magazine (Winter 2020). She works as an instructor of the Marillac rap & poetry program through After School Matters.
Me’Chelle is a genuine soul, with an ambitious nature and passion for mentorship. She works to change many lives for the better within her lifespan.

“Dark Honeeey” is a dedication to the beauty of the black woman. The art and audio you hear was made with the thought of Black women flowing through life figuring it out while being oppressed by sexism, racism, colorism and other forms. Walking around, doing daily tasks with an unmatched grace and a necessary strength.The words Dark Honeeey play on the color of skin and beauty of the person referenced. She’s dark skinned and a “honey” as they would say in the 90’s. While writing this poem, I thought of my mom. She passed away when I was a few months old but our life stories share interesting similarities. Not only because we are made from the same material but because of different “Isms” that still exist.
